Perks Of Being A Welders Wife!

Making unique but practical planters involves prototypes, experiments and the occasional cast off!

Being the wife of a welder means that sometimes the cast offs come home. Sometimes I get the chance to put planters through their paces, see how patina develops, how they drain, how much compost they take, but mostly I get to enjoy how they look!

I am Katy, I manage the Aga range cooker services branch of Blake & Bull, Marcus is our Gates & Railings designer, fabricator, engineer and all round metal enthusiast! He has an eye for a 'lost bit of metal', and last year he turned bits of Aga range cooker and scrap steel into a BBQ {of sorts}.

This year It is looking weathered having been left exposed and untreated. Its the perfect height for our garden table, so I have made it into a pick and enjoy herb planter. And I discovered hissop, now officially my favourite herb, it smells like beer!

Large hand made steel galvanised planter made in the UK aged planter Antique galvanised planterI also have one of our first test pieces for our planter range. With large scale rivets and sleigh hand scrolled ends, it is quite grand in my modest Corsham garden.

It is galvanised so it will withstand the elements for many a year, its really deep for long roots, and Marcus used a special {shh! it's a secret} ageing method to 'knock back' the shiny new galvanised finish.

large hand made arts and crafts antique vintage galvanised planter In this one I have trailing rosemary, evening primrose, fennel, oregano, and a punchy salad leaf herb that I forget the name of!

I am looking forward to seeing how it ages, its in quite an exposed windy spot, I will update next year with new patina images. ..

Maybe next year I will be lucky enough to host a few more 'prototypes', Marcus has a lot of ideas!
